The L 83 SA TOP SUK needle (needle system L 83 SA TOP) has a medium ball point for working knit fabrics, without damaging the loops. It is used in Schiffli embroidery machines. Thinner needle sizes are used, among others, for standard embroidery on medium-weight fabrics, and the thicker versions for dense embroidery on heavy base fabrics. As embroidery thread, a size No. 60 to No. 30 thread matching the needle size chosen is usually recommended, e.g. Amann Isacord. The ball point glides between the loops instead of piercing them, keeping the seam clean and undamaged.
CANU is the abbreviation for "Catalog Number" and represents the system developed by the German needle manufacturer SCHMETZ and used worldwide today for the summary and identification of the same sewing machine needles, which have various designations specific to the sewing machine manufacturer (needle systems).

Needles with a normal chrome coating can be recognized by their shiny silver surface. The chrome coating provides protection against wear and corrosion. The surface is smooth and protects the material and the thread. Chrome needles can be used for all standard applications. Compared to nickel-plated needles, chrome-plated needles improve the service life of the needle at higher stitch counts. At Groz-Beckert, the equivalent chrome coating is being gradually replaced by their more environmentally friendly "dur" process.
