The needle of system 578 B has a normal round point for working woven and knit fabrics. This is a curved needle: it penetrates only the surface of the material and stays invisible on the right side of the fabric – the standard design for overlock, blind-stitch and linking (kettling) machines. It is used in industrial chain-stitch special-purpose machines with a curved needle, among others for overlock, blind-stitch and linking (kettling) work. The available needle sizes are used, among others, for medium-weight standard woven and knit fabrics for everyday garment production. As sewing thread, a matching thickness is usually recommended depending on the needle size chosen, e.g. from Amann Serafil (polyester) or Rasant (polyester/cotton).
CANU is the abbreviation for "Catalog Number" and represents the system developed by the German needle manufacturer SCHMETZ and used worldwide today for the summary and identification of the same sewing machine needles, which have various designations specific to the sewing machine manufacturer (needle systems).
Tip with a pointed conical bevel. The normal round tip is the standard tip shape. With household needles this tip shape is used for the needles known as universal needles most of the time no top suffix «R» is used. Needles with a normal chrome coating can be recognized by their shiny silver surface. The chrome coating provides protection against wear and corrosion. The surface is smooth and protects the material and the thread. Chrome needles can be used for all standard applications. Compared to nickel-plated needles, chrome-plated needles improve the service life of the needle at higher stitch counts. At Groz-Beckert, the equivalent chrome coating is being gradually replaced by their more environmentally friendly "dur" process.
Curved needles, apart from a few special cases (such as looper/linking needles), come in two main groups: 1. the slightly curved overlock needles 2. the strongly curved blindstitch needles. In the overlock field, there is now almost only one standard system B-27 (DCX27 as well as old designations such as MY 1023 and UY 191 GS). This straight needle is manufactured by Schmetz in the SERV 7 design as standard (deep special hollow groove, reinforced shaft), since very high sewing speeds (up to 8,000 stitches/min) are used, requiring a very stable needle. Curved overlock needles are still very rarely used in the hosiery industry.
