In the context of textiles and clothing, lace is a collective term for very different decorative elements consisting only of yarn or of yarn and fabric. What all forms of lace have in common is that they are openwork, i.e. holes of varying sizes are formed between the threads, creating a pattern. Therefore, for example, a fabric embroidered with only one motif is not lace.
Lace was and is mostly used as an edge trim on garments; however, there are also "entre-deux laces" used as an insert between two pieces of fabric, flat lace fabrics (so-called plains) and, since the late 19th century, independent objects made of lace that are not part of a garment (e.g. as window decoration such as macramé, Florentine lace, or as table linen).
Today lace is mainly used for clothing such as lingerie, nightwear, women's outerwear, bridal gowns and traditional costumes. Lace is also used in the manufacture of table linen, curtains and liturgical vestments.
The region around Plauen is the German centre for machine-embroidered lace (Plauen lace), while the region around St. Gallen is regarded as the Swiss textile centre (St. Gallen lace).

Lace is thus a broad collective term, and the fabrics and materials used are very diverse.
To find the right needle for your lace fabric, tests are essential! Needle sizes from NM70 to NM90 are recommended.
