Lycra Polyurethane filament from E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Inc., USA (see also elastane).
Lycra consists of a bundle of capillary filaments, whose individual filaments are bonded together into a "quasi-monofilament", giving it a yarn-like structure.
knitwearKnitted fabrics are textile sheet structures in which a loop formed by a thread is looped into another loop. The stitches created in this way can be formed using one or more threads.
This distinguishes knitted fabrics from woven fabrics, in which the fabric is produced by interlacing two thread systems, and also from nonwovens, in which a loose fibre web is consolidated, for example, by heat.
Compared to woven fabric, knitted fabric is characterised by greater stretch and elasticity and, as a result, less creasing. A distinction is made between weft-knitted (Strickware), warp-knitted (Wirkware), rib-knitted (Rippware) and plain weft-knitted (Kulierware) fabrics.
During production, several stitches are pre-formed simultaneously and worked into loops. In contrast, in the production of weft-knitted fabric, each needle is free and works independently of the others.
bodice substancesFoundation garment fabrics are elastic fabrics made of cotton, regenerated fibers or synthetics, used to support the body or correct the figure.
AusbrennersamtBurnout (devoré) is a transparent fabric in which the pattern is created by chemically etching away, i.e. burning out, part of the fibers.
Velor, plushNicki fabric: knit fabric (e.g. loop plush, plush tricot) for pullovers ("Nickis").
Knitted plush: plush tricot, tricot fabric produced on circular knitting machines for lining fabrics and fur imitations, with a pile of any desired height and density, which is less dimensionally stable than that of woven plush.
Cotton knit fabricCotton is a natural fiber from the seed head of the cotton plant. Cotton can be excellently spun and permanently dyed and has the dry handle typical of plant fibers. It is more abrasion-resistant than wool, which is one reason it is also widely used for upholstery fabrics. Cotton is also very tear-resistant and heat-resistant — it can be hot-ironed and steamed. It never builds up static electricity and can be easily brushed up, for example for flannel.
sequined fabricsFabric made of silk or viscose filament in a five- or seven-shaft warp satin weave, also known as satin de Chine.
Elastic materialsThis includes all elastic, highly stretchable materials.
Pannesamt(Panné: French word for panne velvet)
Velvet with a long, flattened pile, highly glossy (mirror velvet).
fine jerseyJersey with a light knit quality for blouses, dresses and shirts.
Jersey originally referred to fabric from the circular knitting machine, but today generally denotes knit fabric with a jersey finish.
According to RAL 367 A, jersey should above all be understood as a single-thread knit fabric with a horizontal thread run.
VelvetFabric with a short (2 to 3mm) pile.
Warp velvet is cut wire-woven fabric (wire velvet) or fabric produced by the double-plush weaving process (double velvet) with varying pile position (standing pile, half and fully laid pile). In warp velvet, the pile is formed with the warp, and the pile binding (pile-up and pile-through binding) takes place at the weft thread.
In weft velvet, the pile is formed by pile wefts that are bound off by the warp threads. The pile loops are cut open after weaving. Weft velvet differs from warp velvet through its high weft density and through the pile binding.
Rib velvet = corduroy.
Fleece, thermal velorFleece (English for a soft fluffy pile, German: Faserpelz) is the English term for a velour fabric, usually made from polyester, e.g. from recycled PET bottles.
In 1979, the fabric was introduced by Malden Mills Industries Inc. (USA). The company markets its products under the brand Polartec and is considered the world market leader in this field.
Fleece is not a woven fabric but a knitted fabric. During knitting, plush loops are formed, which are then cut open and brushed up. Because fleece is pronounced like the German word „Vlies“ (nonwoven), confusion with nonwoven fabric is common in German-speaking countries.
Fleece is used mainly for warm functional clothing in outdoor sports, such as jackets, trousers, hats, gloves, but also blankets.
silk jerseyShirts with stretchShirt fabrics with stretch content (elastic stretch shirts)
Single jerseyOriginally fabric from the circular knitting machine, now generally knit fabric with a jersey finish.
Single jersey is the simple plain knit or plain-knit lining fabric.
Highly elastic knit fabric (lycra, silk jersey)Lycra or silk jersey are knitted fabrics (also called warp-knit or knitwear) made from thread systems, produced industrially by loop formation on a knitting machine. They belong to the knitted fabrics.
Lycra consists of a bundle of capillary filaments, whose individual filaments are bonded together into a "quasi-monofilament", giving it a yarn-like structure.
