The needle of system 1738 ES has a normal round point for working woven and knit fabrics. The KK version has a short shank. It is used in industrial embroidery machines. Suitable machine classes are found, among others, at ZSK (classes J with cap attachment, JB with cap attachment, JF with cap attachment, T with cap attachment), KSM (classes KSM, KSM - ALL CLASSES) and Pfaff (classes KSM, KSM ALL CLASSES). Thinner needle sizes are used, among others, for fine embroidery on light fabrics, and the thicker versions for dense embroidery on heavy fabrics such as denim, terry cloth or caps. As embroidery thread, a size No. 60 to No. 30 thread matching the needle size chosen is usually recommended, e.g. Amann Isacord.
CANU is the abbreviation for "Catalog Number" and represents the system developed by the German needle manufacturer SCHMETZ and used worldwide today for the summary and identification of the same sewing machine needles, which have various designations specific to the sewing machine manufacturer (needle systems).
Tip with a pointed conical bevel. The normal round tip is the standard tip shape. With household needles this tip shape is used for the needles known as universal needles most of the time no top suffix «R» is used. Applications: - Lightweight fabric - Coated materials; heavy woven materials such as Tarpaulins - Laminated materials with soft plastic or thin cardboard (cardboard) - Foils - Leather/Textile combinations
Needles with a normal chrome coating can be recognized by their shiny silver surface. The chrome coating provides protection against wear and corrosion. The surface is smooth and protects the material and the thread. Chrome needles can be used for all standard applications. Compared to nickel-plated needles, chrome-plated needles improve the service life of the needle at higher stitch counts. At Groz-Beckert, the equivalent chrome coating is being gradually replaced by their more environmentally friendly "dur" process.
Short Piston The shorter piston of the KK variant is used in industrial sewing machines (often overlock, coverstitch, or specialized leather and buttonhole machines) where space on the needle bar is very limited. The shortened piston end allows for additional fabric thickness during the stroke in some machine classes. Since the distance from the piston end to the needle eye is identical in both variants, a 134 KK can be used in many standard machines instead of a regular 134. However, it usually doesn’t work the other way around!
Demanding embroidery processes require the use of special needle geometries. Conventional needle geometries often do not meet the requirements, for example when processing sequins, in 3-D embroidery technique, with frequent changes in needle thickness, or when using thick embroidery threads. For these applications, SCHMETZ offers a range of special geometries for the «DBxK5» needle system for multi-head embroidery machines. These include the following needle types:
