The needle of system UY 1970 G has a square point (45°) for working leather, synthetic leather and other coated materials – never for woven fabric, since the cutting action would sever the weave threads. It is used in industrial sewing machines for leather and synthetic-leather work, where the cutting point produces a clean puncture. Suitable machine classes are found, among others, at Keestar (classes GK8-2, GK8-3, GK8-4, GK8-4S), Union Special (classes 80000, 80200 Z 2634 B, 81200, 80000 ALL CLASSES) and Global (classes EF 412 L). At strength NM:250/SIZE:27, this version is especially well suited to thinner to medium-weight leather. A sewing thread in the range Nm 20/2 and heavier is usually suitable; a bonded polyester or nylon thread such as Amann Saba or Coats Dabond is recommended. Needles with a normal chrome coating can be recognized by their shiny silver surface. The chrome coating provides protection against wear and corrosion. The surface is smooth and protects the material and the thread. Chrome needles can be used for all standard applications. Compared to nickel-plated needles, chrome-plated needles improve the service life of the needle at higher stitch counts. At Groz-Beckert, the equivalent chrome coating is being gradually replaced by their more environmentally friendly "dur" process.
