The felting needle is a special needle for decorative felting work without sewing thread.

Its standout feature is a triangular working section with barbs. As the needle is inserted, these barbs carry fibres and cleverly bind wool fleece, wool yarn or other suitable materials into a base fabric.

The felting needle has a round shank 1.2 mm in diameter, whereas the standard shank on household sewing machine needles is 2.04 mm. Since felting needles have no eye, they are not suitable for normal sewing with thread.

Wool or felt-like fabrics work best as a felting base. Experiment with different materials to create decorations and fascinating looks.

Note
The felting needle is only suitable for certain felting machines and special felting kits or punching tools for sewing machines. Please check your instruction manual to see whether your machine is suitable for the felting needle 18x38x1.

Tips
On fabrics with different coloured top and bottom sides, such as denim, the felting needle creates impressive raised textures or a used look.
Felting also combines beautifully with other techniques, such as sewing or embroidery.
Embellish your felted work with beads, sequins, ribbon or other creative decorative materials – your imagination is the only limit.

COATING:	NICKEL or CHROME PLATED Until the end of 2020, nickel-plated needles were the standard for household sewing machines. Since then, Schmetz has been gradually switching production to “chrome-plated” needles for most of its products, as has been the standard for industrial needles for decades.
MATERIAL:	felt Felt is a sheet-like or three-dimensional structure made of feltable fibers, especially hair and wool. According to DIN 61205, a distinction is made between: 1. Needle felt: Created by repeatedly inserting and withdrawing a large number of needles and barbs into a fiber mass (fiber web), which causes the fibers to interlock (mat together). 2. Fulled felt: Created by fulling and pressing a tangled fiber mass (felt fleece) of wool (wool felt) or other animal hair (hair felt) or a hair-wool blend (mixed felt). 3. Woven felt: Created by laying or blowing animal hair (on one or both sides) onto a wool fabric, followed by felting and fulling. 4. Felt cloth: Created from a fabric of feltable fibers that is subjected to a felting process. Fleece, thermal velor Fleece (English for a soft fluffy pile, German: Faserpelz) is the English term for a velour fabric, usually made from polyester, e.g. from recycled PET bottles. In 1979, the fabric was introduced by Malden Mills Industries Inc. (USA). The company markets its products under the brand Polartec and is considered the world market leader in this field. Fleece is not a woven fabric but a knitted fabric. During knitting, plush loops are formed, which are then cut open and brushed up. Because fleece is pronounced like the German word „Vlies“ (nonwoven), confusion with nonwoven fabric is common in German-speaking countries. Fleece is used mainly for warm functional clothing in outdoor sports, such as jackets, trousers, hats, gloves, but also blankets.
