The needle of system 253 S/C has a hook point for moss stitch. It is used in special sewing machines for chenille and moss-stitch applications. Suitable machine classes are found, among others, at Cornely (classes A, AB, ACH, AH). Thinner needle sizes are used, among others, for fine chenille and moss-stitch work on light fabrics, and the thicker versions for heavy, dense chenille and moss-stitch work. As sewing thread, a chenille or effect thread suited to the application is usually recommended, in a thickness matching the needle size chosen.
CANU is the abbreviation for "Catalog Number" and represents the system developed by the German needle manufacturer SCHMETZ and used worldwide today for the summary and identification of the same sewing machine needles, which have various designations specific to the sewing machine manufacturer (needle systems).
Until the end of 2020, the nickel-plated needle was the standard for household sewing machines. Since then, Schmetz has been gradually converting production to "chrome-plated", as has been standard for industrial needles for decades.
